Sculptural and handbuilt

All these pieces have a function as vessels or serving dishes but I make them more as contemplative decorative items for the home.

The tall vessels were originally influenced by the Standing Stones at Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick in the Lake District. I see my work -once it has left me as starting a new life: perhaps being placed at a focal point in the hall or at a turn in the stairs, and therefore being observed in-passing several times each day.

The decorative themes are influenced by my environment. The Artichoke & Cardoon series are from these huge plants which always attract the eye of any visitor. I may texture the surface of the clay before gently curving it to the shape as in I want as in Wheatfield. Or I use fabric or paperclay soaked in slip to add texture to the pieces as in Watery Tree.
